The first day of free practice at the Formula 1 Portuguese Grand Prix has come to an end and the results have again surprised everyone. While today’s winners have not changed, several surprise candidates have been added, such as Alonso, who has had his best moment since returning to the top flight. Lewis Hamilton ended up with the fastest time in the second round, although he remains concerned about the level demonstrated that day. Despite being the fastest, Mercedes is a cut below expected performance. Hamilton took first place after a lap of 1m19s873, and Max Verstappen was back in second in practice. The Dutchman was only a tenth slower than Hamilton and kept his performances high throughout the day. Max completed a lap of 1m19s980. For his part, Valtteri Bottas once again showed that he wanted to change the performance, finishing third, Sergio Pérez could not match the times of the first morning. The Mexican went from third place in Free Practice 1 to tenth place in the second half. Pérez was more than six tenths slower than the fastest Hamilton. Another of those who surprised with his performance was Fernando Alonso, although he did it in a positive way: Fernando finished fifth in the second batch and scored the best session of the year for the Alpine team. Not only was the Spaniard very quick, remaining three tenths behind Hamilton, but Esteban Ocon confirmed the improvements. The Frenchman finished sixth, just behind his teammate. Alpine had confirmed that they would receive improvements for this weekend.Source: Official Formula 1 Twitter
